This is a functional exercise to practice transitioning independently from lying down to sitting up. It will also help strengthen the muscles in the torso and arms. The exercise is suitable for anyone who can sit without support. You will need a stable surface to roll on, such as a mat or a firm mattress. You may want to ask someone to help you with this exercise. Lie on your back, adjust the bed’s height so that your feet can touch the ground when you sit on the edge of the bed. If you find it difficult to sit up from a completely prone position, raise the head of the bed a little. To get out of the right-hand side of the bed, first roll onto your right side. Now ensure your right arm is free. Swing your legs over the edge of the bed to create a counterweight as you push yourself up into a seated position with your left arm. Make sure you are stable before lying back down again. Your movements should be smooth and controlled as you return to a lying position. If you find it difficult to roll over or swing your legs over the edge of the bed independently, ask someone to help you with these movements.
