Exercise 9: Seated balance and head control

The aim of this exercise is to improve balance and head control while seated. The exercise is suitable for anyone who can sit without support. You will need something stable to sit on, such as a firm mattress or a wheelchair. Make sure you’re seated in a stable position on a mat or bed or in a wheelchair. Keep your head upright and tuck your chin in slightly. Now alternate moving your head in different directions: up, down and sideways. Do the same with your torso, leaning forward as far as possible. Use your hands to push yourself back into an upright position. Alternate doing this to the left and right. For an extra challenge, practice balancing in a seated position without using your hands for support. Lift one or both hands off the surface and try to remain upright.
