Exercise 12: 6 months – 1.5 years : Using the support of the legs

Using the support of the legs

In this exercise, the child begins to train to use the support of her/his legs. The exercise is aimed at children from about 6 months of age, or when the child needs to train to use the support of her/his legs. For this exercise, a stable surface is required and preferably a high enough table in front of the child, where toys are placed that entice the child to want to get up.

Description

Sit the child on the adult’s knee and, if necessary, with light support across the child’s knees. To entice the child to stand up, stretch the leg the child is sitting on. To make the movement easier let the child begin from a higher height. The lower you position the child, the harder the exercise. Remember to position the child at such a height that the child really works actively with her/his legs when pushing up. Use your hands, which are resting across the child’s knees, to feel that there is active movement in the child’s legs.
